Ch 16: Social Change

In the video, “Black Lives Matter Movement | global citizen” shows the importance of equality among race in the United States. It highlights the beginning views of blacks: slavery. During slavery blacks were considered ⅗a person and now the journey to make black individuals seen as 5/5. It all started when Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a police officer. Men and Women around the United States demanded justice for this young man, police often shoot before they think. They think someone is the fitting the description of someone their looking for could be any random person. The video related this concept of police shooting and killing without reason to the jury judge of execution. Since then the Black Lives Matter Movement has protested, marched and promoted their movement of equality. Social media has been one of the main highlights of the movement because it has helped individuals express their opinion, get the word spread of news and event information to come together as a community and demand equal rights. The advancement of technology has helped black individuals to record, post, and reflect on their experiences and make others aware of the inequality they’re experiencing. The point is that black lives matter too. They are people and should be treated as such. The only way the world can be great is if we work together and make it great.

I believe this topic is very important for social change because our society is always changing around us whether it be trends, laws, norms, etc. The movement is used by collective behavior, a crowd is formed to act on the goal of enforcing equal rights. Throughout history there has been many social movements for almost anything you can think of. It is very important way to get your point across and educate the public on the purpose of the movement. Just because the law at one point said something was wrong doesn’t mean it is actually true. This is very true for slavery, now it is time where police brutality is so normalized and nothing is being done about the problems created for white police officers who assume someone of the African American race is doing something wrong. I think television shows and movies do not help the movement because it always seems the black man is the one who robs the place or commits the crime. The stereotypes are being formed this way counteract what the movement is trying to prove.

Child Support Laws and Expectations

When you get divorced and have children, most parents don’t feel like they receive enough financial support, if any. If you aren’t fully taking care of a child, then you use have to pay for the other person to take care of your child. It is calculated by your adjusted gross income. The judge can take into any other bones, tips, any other forms income to determine the amount being paid to the primary caretaker of that child. Every state determines the amount of the child support payment, it can change depending on health issues the child may have and the circumstances. There are two factors that determine how much you could possibly pay 1. Your income 2. The amount of time you spend with the child. Once the account has been set, it is hard to change. But it’s more important to pay the bill than not because your work waged could be garnished or you could go to jail if you don’t pay your expenses. payment s includes other factor besides just basic necessities. They determine whether your primary parent live, cost of living, medical attention, schooling, etc. It is recommended you keep record of payments being made because there is a chance they won’t pay and that may result in a court case.

In this chapter we talked about family so I thought it would be important to talk about single parenting, divorce rates and children. In figure 12.2 it shows that in 2016 10.8% of people are single parents, and there are 48.2% married couples. Studies show that young mothers are more likely to assess welfare because they don’t have the funds to take care of a child on their own. This ties into the article because when the other figure in the relationship isn’t paying their dues to not only provide the basic needs of a child but anything else they need the mother often works harder to support the child, pay court bills, and sometimes they cannot do it without help from our government. A belief that women only had children to receive welfare benefits is false, it shows women have children for the sense of belonging and to be values. This is interesting because many women want to be valued and obviously there aren’t in the relationships they’re in, so when they have a child they receive that that looking up to them and to feel needed. The studies show single-parent households vary by race. In 2016, 22% of white children were living with a single parent while 55% of black children were living with one parent.

Race

The article I will be writing about is “Racial bias associated with disparities in disciplinary action across US schools”

The article basically talks about the higher rates of black student punishment rates across the U.S. Princeton University look at over 32 million students across the united states and tested 3,100/3,200 counties in the U.S. The two topics they studied were racial bias and disciplinary reports. They took a survey once every two years that requested disciplinary action that relates to race. There are five common forms of disciplinary action in-school arrest, expulsion, law enforcement referrals, in school suspension, out of school suspension. They found that 13.46% of black students got punished with outside of school suspension, whereas only 3.4% white students got the same punishment. Studies show the disciplinary actions can be challenging in the future and can lead to antisocial behavior and dropouts. Which can later lead to negative life outcomes and getting caught up in the criminal justice system. Throughout the United States this form of disciplinary action is most common in the North East. They found no significant data relating racial bias and disciplinary reports.

This chapter focused in on racism, discrimination and minority groups. The chart shows there are 13.3% black or african americans in the U.S. population in 2016. I think racism plays a role in this situation because of common stereotypes. I believe in the United States stereotypes of black individuals are a major problem in our society. It is the reason behind the Black Lives Matter movement. The fight for justice has not come anywhere near an end. White individuals get away with far more than they should, and black individuals receive more punishment for smaller crimes. In this article specifically it shows how discrimination takes place in our daily lives and often without realizing it, it can have negative effects on the victims. Mentally, it is challenging knowing they are growing up in a world where a determining factor of their punishment is their skin color. Racism is starting at such a young age, so they are exposed to negative stereotypes they have to live with. The school systems are following the criminal justice system and it’s sad to see.

Crime and Demographics

Retired Spokane anesthesiologist’s body found dismembered, burned in backyard

On April 10th, 2019 Dr. Rex Porter’s body was found in pieces and burnt. One afternoon in the neighborhood he was living, a neighbor noticed his garage door open as well as a car door that had been open for about two days, so she called the 911 to call someone to check up on the retired doctor. The police saw broken glass through the windows and was calling Dr. Porter but without a response they entered the household and looked around. As they kept searching they went to the basement and found more broken glass, blood, and other items. They opened the door and saw the Doctor’s son standing there, people knew Rex as the person who took care of his autistic, nonverbal son Derek. In the restroom officers found feces in the toilet and dead animal remains in the sink. A neighbor commented that if Derek was home then Rex should be too. Which lead the to further investigation the police found Dr. Porters remains burned on his 11 acre lot, they found a partially burned leg, a head with glasses and a torso. Derek is in a hospital and charges are pending for the death of Dr. Porter.

This relates really well with chapter 6 because we are talking a lot about crime and demographics. This crime would be considered a violent crime because it is defined as a crime in which violence us either the objective or the means to an end including murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery. In this case, the crime would also be considered a property crime by definition it is a larceny which is destruction of personal property ei: the windows. Crimes are more likely to be committed in poor areas rather than wealthier areas, that was not the case here considering it was his son the most likely committed a hate crime which is a crime targeted towards a person. The son obviously targeted his father for some reason out of hate. Derek does match the age statistic were younger people often commit more crimes. I think this is because they are more mobile than older people and more careless for others and their property. Race is not determined but, it is a controversial topic either way. Also, it is more likely for males to commit crime rather than females. I believe this is because males are often more reckless and not as emotional.

Record Flooding Hits U.S. Midwest, Threatens South

Earlier this year flooding in the midwest impacted nearly twelve million people. For days on end, rain was falling in Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas and Oklahoma with nearly 12 inches of downpour. Rivers near St. Louis, Missouri were at dangerously high levels for flooding towns, forcing people to evacuate, and closedown of sewage companies. The Mississippi River flooded rooftops of buildings causing roads to close from Texas to St. Louis. Many people are evacuated incase the levees cannot be upheld from the mass amounts of rainfall and rivers velocity. Through Tennessee floods were rising and flash flood advisories began to start in the carolinas and Georgia. Currently 24 people have died from driving into flooded areas. This event took a toll on many families, livestock and farmlands. Nearly 2,500 Pigs died because there was no way out of the 4-inch of water in Illinois alone. Crops and Farms are threatened by the flooding while beforehand sales rapidly increase due to the knowledge of ruined farmland. The cause most likely is the El Nino weather which has to do with ocean levels rising due to global warming and changing weather patterns.

In chapter one we talked about sociology perspective which is basically how people think or approach sociology. It starts with the beginner’s mind so it is basically a mind with no expectations or opinions of any sort. This is very hard to come by because people often grow up in cultures where they start learning differences and decide based on their preference. Culture Shock is disorientation when entering a new place or culture. This happens to many people depending on whether its moving to a smaller or bigger place, traveling to other states or countries with different lifestyles or expectations they originally come from. As well as, sociological imagination which is understanding the difference between individual circumstances and societal circumstances. An individual problem is a problem that cannot be traces to an obvious source but still has opportunities. A public issue is a group of people are struggling at the same time for the same reasons or social causes. This article represents larger social structural causes because it is much more than just one person impacted by a problem. It is a society of people with the same struggle: flooding. This is a public issue because it is out on one’s control. This would be considered Macrosociology because it studies a large-scale how the lives of groups and individuals are both affected. Climate change is a major controversial topic that is currently impacting the world and large groups of people therefore making this tragic event a problem of society and not individual.
